I can’t help but wonder if my issues with this book were mostly a case of unfulfilled expectations. A friend told me if I liked Neverwhere I would *love* American Gods (especially given my fascination with mythology) but instead this was a book I really worked my way through. I felt like the story was rather disjointed, there were brief periods of intense action and long stretches of inaction. The interruptions where Gaiman explained how some of the Gods were brought to the country were fascinating but it kind of took me out of the story and I sometimes had a hard time getting back in it. (Even worse sometimes I found those tidbits so fascinating I was sorry to see them end and to be returned to the story.) It was a better than average read, but not my favorite and not my favorite Gaiman by a long shot.
